Awards

The following awards will be presented during the Congress:

  • EAP Young Investigator Award
  • ESPR Early Career Investigators Award
  • ESPR Bengt Robertson Award for Research Concerning the Neonatal Lung

PLEASE NOTE: Should you wish to be considered for one of the awards, please apply when submitting your abstract. One award may be applied for per abstract.

Applicants must have an abstract accepted by the Scientific Committee in order to be considered for one of the awards above. Abstract acceptance and award decisions will be made in parallel so applications need to be made before the extended abstract deadline of 24 April 2024.

EAP YOUNG INVESTIGATOR AWARD

Up to one prize will be awarded at the discretion of the committee, following onsite presentations and the decisions made are final. Winners will be announced during the Congress Closing Ceremony, and will be presented with a certificate confirming their prize.

Requirements:

  • Must be an EAP member (please refer to individual membership* categories here).
  • Must be < 35 years of age. Clear copy of ID indicating date of birth is to be submitted.
  • CV is to be submitted.
  • Content of the abstract must represent original work and not presented/ or published previously.
  • The name of the presenting author MUST match the name of the applicant.
  • Requests that do not conform to above terms will automatically be declined.
  • Selected finalists to be informed in advance and must confirm their attendance to the Congress.

Judgment criteria will be based on:

  • Scientific content
  • Structure of the abstract
  • Presentation
  • Ability to defend the paper/results during question time from the audience onsite during the Congress

Prize:

  • EUR 1,500

ESPR EARLY CAREER INVESTIGATORS AWARD

ESPR Early Career Investigator Prize at the 10th Congress of the European Academy of Paediatric Societies (EAPS 2024) in honour of Prof Henry Halliday. 

Requirements: 

  • applicants must be ESPR members.
  • applicants must be under 36 years of age. A copy of your ID indicating the date of birth is to be submitted along with the CV; applicants >36 years of age, for example due to maternity leave, serious illness or differences in the timeline of their degree, will be considered on an individual basis if content of the abstract relates to work from a primary postgraduate degree (MD/PhD), completed within 2 years of application for the Early Career Investigator Award;
  • applicants will not be considered where the content of the abstract relates to work from postdoctoral research work;
  • the content of the abstract must represent original work and cannot be presented and/or published previously;
  • the name of the presenting author MUST match the name of the applicant.

Selected finalists will be informed in advance and must confirm their attendance of the congress.

Evaluation criteria:

  • scientific content
  • structure of the abstract
  • presentation skills
  • ability to defend their results during a Q&A session

Prizes will be awarded at the discretion of the committee following presentations. The decisions made are final. Winners will be announced during the EAPS 2024 closing ceremony and will be presented with a certificate.

Prizes: 

  • 1st prize: EUR 1000; complimentary registration and a travel grant of up to EUR 1000 for reimbursement for the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) Annual Meeting 2025 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
  • 2nd prize: EUR 500; complimentary registration to the 2025 ESPR Annual Meeting: the joint European Neonatal Societies Congress (jENS 2025).

About Henry Halliday:

Prof Henry Halliday was a paediatrician and neonatologist who was born on 29 November 1945 in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

In 1997, he was president of the European Society for Paediatric Research (ESPR), fostering research to improve patient treatment and advance clinical practice. As a long-standing ESPR member he was striving towards the ESPR’s mission of developing and applying research to improve newborn and child health.

He was a pioneering figure in the field of neonatology and was the first British doctor to specialize in the care of newborn babies. He was a founding member of the Neonatal Society and was the first President of the British Association of Perinatal Medicine. He was also a strong advocate for the establishment of neonatal intensive care units in the UK.

The ESPR dedicates the Early Career Investigator Prize to the life and achievements of Prof Henry Halliday.

ESPR BENGT ROBERTSON AWARD FOR RESEARCH CONCERNING THE NEONATAL LUNG

The winner will present their abstract during the designated Bengt Robertson Award session, and will be presented with a certificate confirming their prize.

Requirements:

  • Abstracts must be on research concerning the neonatal lung.
  • Content of the abstract must be original work.
  • Must be an ESPR member or intending to become one.
  • Presenting authors must be < 36 years of age. Clear copy of ID indicating date of birth is to be submitted.
  • CV is to be submitted.
  • The name of the presenting author MUST match the name of the applicant.
  • Requests that do not conform to above terms will automatically be declined.
  • The winner will be informed in advance and must confirm their attendance to the Congress.

  • Scientific content
  • Structure of the abstract

Prize:

  • EUR 3,000; complimentary registration to the 2025 ESPR Annual Meeting: the joint European Neonatal Societies Congress (jENS 2025).
